Informing you about the destruction* of the inside waters of beautiful British Columbia by the proposed pipelines to The Private Port of Kitimat to fill supertankers with crude oil.

* History has shown us that a major spill is not a matter of "IF" but "WHEN."

In case you didn't know, although a 2006 independent poll showed that 75% of British Columbians support an oil tanker ban, our federal government is funding the oil industry to develop a supertanker port in Kitimat, B.C. at the head of Douglas Channel, a 140 km fjord that opens near Gil Island where a B.C. Ferry sank in 2006. A federal funding news release was issued on February 22, 2008 , one day after Enbridge announced it had rekindled plans for a C$4 billion pipeline from the oil sands to Canada's West Coast.

It's happening! If we don't stop them now, we never will.

Trade, Investment and Labour Mobility Agreement (TILMA)

Putting investors first and the public last.

A new free trade pact went into effect between Alberta and B.C. It's called the Trade, Investment and Labour Mobility Agreement (TILMA) and it will have a devastating effect on local democracy, public health and the environment.

Census gives Kitimat dubious distinction

B.C. mining town leads the country in declining population

  • Figures from the 2006 census released Tuesday show it leads the country in declining population. Kitimat's population dropped 12.6 per cent — 10,285 in 2001 to 8,987 in 2006 — following a 12.1 per cent reduction from 1996 to 2001.

This is how the elected politicians of Kitimat, with their Private International Port, have decided to save their dying town. If they are going down, so is everything around them going to die. And there is no law to stop them.

SUPERTANKER POLLUTION

Oil spills have devastating effects on the environment. Crude oil contains polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) which is very difficult to clean up, and lasts for years in the sediment and marine environment.[89] Marine species constantly exposed to PAHs can exhibit developmental problems, susceptibility to disease, and abnormal reproductive cycles.

Chronological information includes the history and discovery of crude oil production in Alberta and B.C. by primarily American corporate interests, including the establishment of crude oil pipeline structures, and the grave concerns of British Columbians and Americans on proposed oil tanker traffic of the western Pacific coastline.

In Google Earth, you can see a great aerial view of the proposed supertanker route by going from the port in Kitimat, down a 140 km fjord, past Gil Island, where a B.C. Ferry sank in March, 2006, and on to Asia and California.

This is where they propose to send oil-filled supertankers!

B.C. WATERS

Three minute version

(Bill Gannon and Rex Weyler 1977)

B.C. waters, rollin’ ocean,
Don’t want no supertankers hangin’ around
Sea to shining sea - slick to slick? Ugh!
Don’t want no supertankers runnin’ aground

The oilmen, they don’t give a damn, they do it every time
Risk the whole environment, to save them selves a dime

B.C. waters, rollin’ ocean,
Don’t want no supertankers crossin’ my line
B.C. waters, oooh how we love ya
Don’t let them do it we can stop them in time
Don’t let them do it we can stop them in time
Don’t let them do it we can STOP THEM!

B.C. Waters, rollin’ ocean
There’s an eagle flyin’ over my head
Some people got some kind of crazy notion
‘Bout havin smokestacks risin’ up there instead

Some people just don’t understand, if ya turn the ocean black
All the money in the world will never buy it back.

B.C. waters, rollin’ ocean
Don’t need no super tankers hangin’ around
B.C. waters, oooh how we love ya
Don’t let them do it we can stop them in time
Don’t let them do it we can stop them in time
Don’t let them do it we can STOP THEM!

B.C. waters, land of plenty
The ocean gives us our supper for free
Your sons and daughters won’t need that oil money
If we just leave them the land and the sea

Some people just don’t understand, they think it could be sold
They’d fill the sea with poison just to fill their purse with gold.

B.C. waters, rollin’ ocean
Don’t need no super tankers crossin’ my line
B.C. waters, how we love ya
Don’t let them do it we can stop them in time.
Don’t let them do it we can stop them in time.
Don’t let them do it we can STOP THEM!

(the next verse was written by J. Scott for the 2007 Ambush at the Victoria, B.C. Parliament Buildings)

Alberta Tar Sands, we don’t want ‘em
Releasing CO2 into the air
Global Warming, it’s getting hotter
It’s time for action by all people who care.

Your oil men they don’t give a damn, they’ll do it every time
They’d declare a war upon our shore just to save themselves a dime

B.C. waters, rollin’ ocean
Don’t need no super tankers crossin’ my line
B.C. waters, how we love ya
Don’t let them do it we can stop them in time.
Don’t let them do it we can stop them in time.
